The artist Gunter Demnig started this project. It was launched to commemorate people who were driven out, deported, murdered or driven to suicide by the Nazis.
The stones are inserted into the pavement in front of the victims´ houses and flats. They have a brass surface with a text that commemorates the former inhabitants.
The stumbling blocks are financed by donations and sponsoring. After they are laid they are owned by the city.
In Xanten, it is exclusively Jewish fellow citizens who are commemorated by the stumbling blocks.
Despite much effort, some addresses could not be found, so some of the stumbling blocks were laid in important public places, for example in front of the town hall. The project was initiated in Xanten by C. Dieter Hinnenberg and Dr Wolfgang Schneider.
