The village is one of the oldest and most significant places of pilgrimage in the Lower Rhineland.
A small museum documents the history of the church and pilgrimage in Marienbaum.
The late Gothic quire in the parish church dates from the mid 15th century.
About 1430, an image of the Virgin Mary appeared to an ill shepherd in a dream. She had been in a tree with a strange trunk in the form of steps. He found the tree, became well again, and soon a place of pilgrimage had developed. The village of Marienbaum grew around the monastery built by Maria of Burgundy.
In 1802 the monastery was destroyed under French rule and the minster became a parish church.
Nature-lovers will enjoy the nearby forest with a good network of paths. There is also a very pleasant barbecue site, which is available to hire. The imposing Balken House, a private property, dates from the late 18th century.
The beauty of Marienbaum is down to its dedicated inhabitants and the members of the local history and residents' club.
