In the early Middle Ages pilgrims were already coming to Xanten to visit St. Victor´s shrine.
Today, many Christians still make the journey to St. Victor´s Cathedral. There they also commemorate some of the Christians who died for their beliefs during the Third Reich, among them the priest Karl Leisner who was beatified by Pope John Paul II.
The village of Marienbaum was the most important place of pilrimage in the Lower Rhineland in the Middle Ages. As the name suggests, a statue of the Virgin Mary, which worked miracles according to legend, is worshipped there. The local museum houses a small exhibition on the history of pilgrimage to Marienbaum. In 2007 a package for pilgrims was developed.
