This double gate, built in 1393, is am impressive remnant of the medieval town fortifications. Apart from the upper storeys, which were reconstructed after the Second World War, the gate is original.
The first gate, on the outside the town, is flanked by two round towers. A bridge-like entrance, which used to cross the defensive ditch, leads to the three-storey main gate.
This square gatehouse has been used for many different purposes over the years, including a museum.
Today the Cleves Gate houses three modern, comfortably equipped apartments, which can be rented as holiday accommodation. They offer visitors to Xanten somewhere to stay with a unique historical atmosphere.
