The southern entrance to the close still appears to be well-fortified. A passage that can easily be closed separates it from the Romanesque Dionysius Chapel. Between 1472 and 1478 Michael's Chapel was built on top of the gate, itself erected about 1000.
It is no coincidence that the chapel was dedicated to Michael: as the guardian of heaven, the archangel Michael seemed particularly suited to protect and defend the main entrance of a monastery.
The present Michael's chapel was rebuilt after World War II and now houses the small concert hall of the Cathedral Music School (Dommusikschule).
